Individuals with Angelman Syndrome are sometimes unable to walk, unable to talk, and can even sometimes have seizures. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by individuals with this condition, our approach to exercise modification is both thoughtful and unique, ensuring that each athlete can engage in physical activity safely and enjoyably.
Because balance and motor control can be challenging with Angelman Syndrome, we have our coaches focus on low impact exercises to minimize the risk of falls and injuries for these individuals. Fort hose who have balance and coordination difficulties, incorporate specific drills that work on those skills. Some examples of drills could include standing on one foot, walking on a balance beam, or even simple yoga – which will be a new offering in our new space in Deptford!
With our new space, we made sure to put emphasis on creating a safe and comfortable environment for any individuals with all abilities to work within and challenge their skills.
Communication is also impaired in most individuals with Angelman syndrome, so we use a lot of hand-over-hand training on many exercises. Also, visually, using our bright colored cones where certain exercises need to be done and having music playing often helps. We also ensure our athlete’s social needs are met with our classes being full of individuals of all different abilities. Each class has multiple instructors to ensure the right amount of social interaction with friends or to make new ones. Even with smaller classes, everyone has the chance to participate and feel as part of the team.
At Spectrum we believe in the power of fitness to positively impact lives, including the lives of individuals with Angelman Syndrome. Through making a fun and challenging workout while being understanding of the special needs involved in Angelman Syndrome, we aim to improve physical well being and also their confidence in moving and feeling of joy as they move. Spectrum Sports’ commitment is to provide a gym that is non-judgmental and inclusive; every athlete can be proud of their achievements, no matter how small or large.
